Getting started
How do I get started with Butterfly?
Download Butterfly from the App Store and open it. A short interactive tutorial — using sample photos, not yours — shows the gestures. Then allow Full Access to your photo library, pick a batch, and start swiping.
Why does Butterfly need Full Access to my photo library?
To show your photos for review and to delete the ones you confirm. Limited Access only exposes the few photos you pick, which isn't enough to review a library, so Butterfly asks for Full Access. Everything happens on your device and nothing is uploaded.
I chose Limited Access or denied access. How do I fix it?
Open the Settings app, go to Privacy & Security › Photos › Butterfly, and choose Full Access. Butterfly also shows a shortcut to Settings whenever access is missing.
Swipe controls
What do the swipe gestures mean?
Swipe left to keep a photo and move on. Swipe up to mark it for deletion. Swipe down to add it to Favorites, or remove it. Swipe right to go back to the previous photo.
Can I change my mind about a photo?
Yes. Swipe right to go back and decide again, or tap the trash button at the top to return marked items to the queue.
Does Butterfly work with Live Photos and videos?
Yes. Press and hold to play a Live Photo, and use the built-in player to play, scrub and mute videos. Double-tap or pinch to zoom, and tap the left or right edge of the screen to step between items.
What is the information shown under each photo?
A camera-style panel showing when and where the photo was taken, the device and lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, resolution and file size. You can turn it off in Settings › Preferences.
Deletion & recovery
Are deleted photos gone forever?
Not right away. Confirmed deletions go to the Recently Deleted album in Apple's Photos app, where they stay for 30 days before iOS removes them permanently. You can restore them from there at any time within that window.
Can I review what I'm about to delete?
Yes. Tap the trash button at the top of a batch to see everything you've marked, then delete the selection right away or return items to the queue. At the end of a batch, nothing is deleted until you tap Confirm Batch.
What happens if I leave a batch halfway through?
Butterfly asks whether to delete the photos you've marked so far or discard those changes. Photos you kept stay exactly as they are.
Purchases & settings
How do I restore my Lifetime purchase?
Go to Settings in Butterfly and tap Restore Purchases while signed in with the Apple ID you used to buy it.
Does my progress sync between iPhone and iPad?
No. Review progress is stored only on each device, so each one keeps its own record of what you've reviewed. Your Lifetime purchase works on all of them.
Can I start over?
Yes. Settings › Preferences › Reset all progress clears the reviewed marks so every photo shows up again. It doesn't delete or change any photos.
Can I change the batch size or the language?
Yes. Choose 20, 50 or 100 items per batch in Settings, and switch between English and Simplified Chinese — or follow the system language — under Language.
